The ferry is now closed for the winter. Thankyou to everyone who has visited and supported us during the season. Most importantly, a huge thank-you to our wonderful volunteers!! without you, none of this would have been possible.
Would you be able to offer a few hours on a weekend, would you like to be a volunteer and to help with the historic ferry next season (2010)
Please give us a call on 07805 865053 and let us know of your interest.
See you in 2010 !!!
The unique passenger foot ferry is a rare reaction cable ferry which links the two villages of Hampton Loade, separated by the River Severn.
In 2004 a new ferry boat was built by the nearby Ironbridge Gorge Museum to the design of the previous boat which had seen 38 years service. The new ferry was constructed combining both traditional and modern techniques, using mainly larch timber, with an oak frame.
In June 2007, the village on the west bank suffered major damage as a result of a severe rainstorm. The one and only road into the village was washed away. This affected services on the Severn Valley Railway, with a consequent loss of tourist revenue to the ferry and the local area. The Ferry had not operated since, until...
On Friday 17th April 2009, the newly formed Hampton Loade Community Trust (HLCT) succeeded in returning the Ferry back to the water. HLCT is a community interest company; a not for profit organisation and relies upon the drive and enthusiasm of it's trustees, supporters and volunteers. HLCT has assumed responsibility for the operation and preservation of the ferry for the foreseeable future.
On Saturday 25th April 2009, the ferry carried it's first passengers in nearly 2 years, across the River Severn.
